Slide-outs are the #1 source of "I just want to enjoy my rig" frustration. They're complicated mechanical systems with a thousand parts that all have to work together, and when one doesn't, your slide doesn't extend, doesn't retract, or - worst case - jams half-way and won't go either direction. About 30% of all our service calls touch a slide somewhere.

The good news: most slide problems are mechanical, not catastrophic. A slide that won't go in is usually a binding rail, a worn motor brush, or a broken shear pin. A slide that drifts is usually a hydraulic leak or a bad solenoid. We carry the parts that fail most often, so most slide calls are one-visit fixes.

Why Slide-Out Repair Fails Faster in Florida

Five things kill slides faster than the manual says they should: weather seals dry-rotting (Florida sun does this fast), debris in the rails (oak leaves and pine needles in storage), motor brushes wearing past their service life, gear racks getting out of sync, and hydraulic fluid leaks at the rams.

Schwintek systems (the in-wall worm-drive type) fail differently than Lippert hydraulic systems. Schwintek slides eat motors and gear packs - we do a lot of those rebuilds. Lippert hydraulic slides leak at the cylinder seals or the manifold solenoids - those are pump-and-line jobs.

What We Fix - Slide-Out Repair

What Our Slide-Out Repair Service Includes

Slide service starts with a no-load test. We power the slide while watching the rails, listening for the motor, and feeling for binding. That tells us mechanical vs. electrical. Then we test power at the motor leads to confirm the controller and switch are working. From there we know whether it's a rail issue, a motor issue, or a control issue.

Most slide repairs finish in one visit. Motor swaps run 90 minutes. Gear-pack rebuilds run 3-4 hours. Hydraulic seal jobs run a half-day. Full slide rebuilds (the kind where the slide came out and got tweaked) run a day or two depending on what we find.

All major systems

Schwintek, HWH, Lippert, BAL, and Power Gear. We service all of them and stock the most-failed parts.

We rebuild Schwintek gear packs in the bay where they live. No removing the slide unless we have to.

Hydraulic system service

Cylinder reseal, line replacement, pump rebuild, and full hydraulic flushes for Lippert and HWH systems.

Seal replacement

Wiper seals, sweep seals, bulb seals, and floor sweeps - we carry the most-common profiles in 50ft rolls.

Florida-Specific Slide-Out Repair Considerations

Florida sun is harder on slide seals than just about any other climate. The black bulb seals around your slide perimeter dry-rot and crack within 5-7 years if you don't UV-protect them. We see slides in central Florida with 6-year-old factory seals leaking like sieves, and those rigs are otherwise mint. The fix is a fresh seal kit and a habit of treating the seals twice a year with 303 protectant.

The other Florida slide killer is afternoon thunderstorm volume. If you've got a topper that's old or sagging, a heavy 30-minute summer thunderstorm pools water on top of the slide. That weight stresses the rails, and over time they twist. Once a slide has twisted rails, you're often into a major rebuild.

Emergency Slide-Out Repair Service Across Florida

Slide stuck out at a campground when you need to pack up is borderline-emergency. Call us and we'll talk you through the manual override first - most slides have one and most owners have never used it. If the manual override doesn't work, we'll roll a truck. During season we can usually be there same-day or next-day for stuck-extended emergencies.

Slide stuck in is less urgent - inconvenient but you can travel. Call when you have time and we'll schedule the next available slot.

FAQ

Slide-Out Repair - Common Questions

Straight answers from our slide-out repair call log.

My slide grinds when it goes in - is the motor dying?

Could be. More often it's debris in the rail or worn shear pins. We diagnose with a no-load test - if the motor sounds healthy with the slide disconnected, the noise is mechanical and the fix is cheaper. - Earl

How long do slide motors last?

Schwintek motors typically run 6-10 years of normal use. Lippert hydraulic systems often outlast the rig - the cylinders leak before the pump fails. We see motor replacements at the 7-year mark on average.

Can my slide come out on the highway?

Not without serious failure of the safety stops. The bigger risk is the slide creeping out a few inches - we see this on rigs with worn motor brakes. The fix is a brake-resistor replacement, about $245.

What's the manual override on my slide?

Depends on the system. Schwintek slides have a hex-driven shaft you turn with a wrench. Lippert hydraulic slides have a hand-pump valve. Look at your owner's manual - if you can't find it, send us a photo of the slide mechanism and we'll talk you through it on the phone.

My slide leaks when it rains - can you fix it?

Yes. Almost always a worn bulb seal or a loose sweep seal. Full perimeter reseal runs $385-$685. We can also reseal just the affected side for less. - Earl

Should I lubricate my slide rails?

Yes - twice a year. We use Lippert Slick Stick or Thetford slide-out conditioner, never WD-40 (it dries out and attracts grit). Takes about 20 minutes per slide and we'll do all your slides for $145 if you want us to.

Why does my slide drift in overnight?

On a hydraulic slide, that's a manifold solenoid leaking back into the reservoir. About a $385-$685 fix. On a Schwintek, a slide doesn't drift - if yours is moving with the motor off, something's actually broken.

Can you replace a slide topper at my site?

Yes, this is one of our most common slide jobs. Carefree, Solera, and Lippert toppers all serviced. Plan on 90 minutes to 2 hours for a single topper depending on length.

My slide is half-way out and won't move - what now?

Don't force it. Call us. We'll diagnose remotely first - sometimes it's a thermal cutout that resets after 15 minutes, sometimes it's a busted gear that needs a tech. Forcing a stuck slide is how you turn a $400 fix into a $2,800 fix. - Earl

How much for a full slide inspection?

$185 for a complete slide inspection with seal check, rail alignment check, and motor test. Worth doing annually if your rig is over 5 years old.
